Timeframes for connection

You will need to request a new Natural Gas connection to your home when electricity or LPG is presently used for room heating, hot water and cooking and the intention is to replace one or more of these with Natural Gas appliances.

Once a complete connection application is lodged by a home owner, energy retailer or Natural Gas Specialist, a connection offer will usually be made within 10 business days. Subject to the Model Standing Offer for basic connection services, Jemena will endeavour to commence and complete the connection request within 20 business days of the offer being accepted and your energy retailer issuing the necessary service orders to us.

Connection costs

Jemena do not charge the applicant for a basic connection.

For sites we deem not to be a basic connection where, for example, a mains extension or traffic control is required to carry out the connection, a contribution may be payable by the applicant and will be outlined in the connection offer.

There may also be other costs not charged by Jemena which we have set out in our Model Standing Offer.

Choosing your energy retailer

For a new connection, you can make arrangements directly wtih your preferred energy retailer. This will mean that from the time the gas is connected to your property, you will be billed for gas usage by your chosen retailer. If you don't have a preferred gas retailer, you can apply online via Connect & Manage My Gas or by sending us a paper application form.  If you accept our offer for connection, we’ll allocate a retailer to supply gas to your property. You are able to change if you prefer a different gas retailer once the gas has been connected.

Get connected to Natural Gas

Anyone within the Jemena Gas Network region can apply to connect to Natural Gas. First, confirm gas is available in your street, then contact your licensed plumber or find a Natural Gas Specialist to install appliances once the meter has been installed at your property.

How do I apply?

If you’re happy to be assigned to a default energy retailer, you can apply for connection through our online self-service portal ‘Connect & Manage My Gas’. Otherwise, you can contact an energy retailer of your choice and they'll request the connection on your behalf, or apply by submitting a paper application form.

What happens next?

Once we have received a complete connection application, we will usually make an offer for connection within 10 business days, or let you know if we have more assessment work to do. The terms of this offer will depend on the site conditions and your intended gas usage. We might need to visit the site to provide you with an offer.

Subject to the Model Standing Offer for basic connection services, Jemena will endeavour to commence and complete the connection request within 20 business days of the offer being accepted and your retailer issuing the necessary service orders to us.

Connection types

For most new and existing homes, we install pipes from our mains to the meter, and install the meter kit. You will need to talk to your licenced gasfitter or plumber to get appliances connected to the gas supply or contact one of our preferred Natural Gas Specialists.

The connection service will be determined by us based on information you provide, including information about conditions at the site, and the service you request. In some cases, connection to a path valve at the boundary of your property may be provided, or a meter only.
